ADHD, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a condition that presents as an attention or behavioral disturbance that affects a child’s ability function on a daily basis. These behavioral problems can be so severe that they cause learning difficulties as well as problems at home and in social situations.
A diagnosis of ADHD can be reached after obtaining information from a parent, teachers, and others who are important in the child's life. There is no single test. The process involves many steps and gathering information from many sources. Symptoms must be between 6 months to a year time span, and a physical exam with developmental screens are used to formalize the diagnosis.
Treatment of ADHD is multi-factorial. They benefit greatly from behavioral, parenting, and social skill training. The school will be contacted to start a learning plan that is specific for your child. Some patients may benefit from taking medication. However, these may cause side effects and other health risks, so medication should be given only under the supervision of your child’s doctor.
